A Student Success Story of Overcoming Challenges

Every student faces obstacles, but some have to break through even greater barriers to achieve success. Jaqueline Hernandez’s student success story is an inspiring example of perseverance and growth. From navigating personal and financial challenges to stepping into leadership, her journey highlights how determination and the right support can make a difference.

Jaqueline became a UFCS intern and peer navigator through the Young Adult Action Advisory Council (YAAAC), a program designed to provide opportunities for young leaders. She needed extra income and a flexible role, so when the Peer Navigator Program was introduced, she applied and was placed at UFCS. This experience became a turning point in her personal and professional development.

Overcoming Barriers as a Peer Navigator

One of the biggest challenges Jaqueline faced was outreach. Many students did not respond, and constant rejections made it difficult to stay motivated. However, she reminded herself that even if only a few students engaged, those interactions made a meaningful impact. This mindset kept her going and strengthened her resilience.

Another challenge was stepping out of her comfort zone. As an introvert, initiating conversations with strangers was not easy. But through her role, she gradually became more outgoing, building confidence in her communication skills. The experience even led her to speak on her first panel, something she never imagined doing before.

The Impact of Leadership and Service

Jaqueline’s student success story is not just about personal growth but also about the impact she made in her community. By supporting students through outreach and mentorship, she contributed to UFCS’s mission of helping learners stay on track. Her work, though sometimes behind the scenes, played a crucial role in connecting students with valuable resources.

Her experience as a peer navigator also shaped her career aspirations. She discovered a passion for the nonprofit sector and now wants to explore different roles within it. She believes that every role, no matter how small it may seem, contributes to a bigger mission.

Advice for Future Student Leaders

Jaqueline’s advice to others is simple but powerful: “Even though your role may not feel big, it contributes to the bigger picture.” Every effort matters, and by staying committed, students can make a real impact.

Her student success story serves as a reminder that challenges can be stepping stones to growth. With perseverance, mentorship, and a willingness to learn, students can break barriers and create their own paths to success.

Breaking Barriers One Step at a Time

Jaqueline’s story is a testament to the power of persistence, personal growth, and the impact of service. She overcame financial challenges, self-doubt, and communication barriers, ultimately becoming a more confident leader and advocate.
